Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 7, 2026
This policy explains how IdealofTech ("we") collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you visit idealoftech.ca, buy from us, chat with us, sign up for emails, or use our repair and sell-or-trade services. We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for Quebec residents, Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector.
1. Who we are and how to reach our Privacy Officer
IdealofTech, 472 Taunton Rd W, Oshawa, ON L1L 0W1, Canada. Questions, requests and complaints go to our Privacy Officer through our contact form (choose any topic and mention "Privacy"), by phone at +1 905 725 0097, or by mail to the address above.
2. What we collect
- Orders and accounts: name, email, phone, shipping and billing address, order history, and account details if you create an account. Payments are handled by our payment processors. We don't receive or store your full card number.
- Messages and forms: what you send us through our contact, repair, business-quote and sell-or-trade forms, by email, phone, or the chat on our site.
- Repairs: your contact details, the device's make, model and serial number, the problem, estimates, approvals and work done.
- Sell or trade: device details, serial number or IMEI, condition, photos you send, payment details for Interac e-Transfer, and, where we ask for them, proof of ownership and ID details (see section 6).
- Data on devices you give us: we may see data stored on a device during repair or inspection. We access only what we need, and we don't copy your files unless you ask us to (for example, for a data transfer).
- Website use: device and browser information, IP address, pages viewed and similar data, collected through cookies and similar technologies by our platform, Shopify (see section 8).
- Marketing preferences: whether you've agreed to receive promotional emails, and when and how you agreed.
3. Browser tests and games
Our keyboard, screen, mouse, speaker, microphone and camera tests run in your browser. Our test code doesn't send what you type, say or show the camera to us or anyone else. If you tick "Use my results to start a repair booking", a short summary of the issues you marked is copied into the repair form, and it's sent to us only if you submit that form. Game best scores are stored only in your browser.
4. Why we use it
- To process orders, payments, shipping, returns, warranty claims, repairs and trade-ins
- To answer your questions and provide customer support
- To verify ownership and prevent fraud, theft and misuse
- To keep records required by law, such as tax and accounting records
- To run, secure and improve our website
- To send promotional emails, only if you've agreed (see section 7)
- For advertising and personalization through Shopify and Google, as described in section 8
5. Who we share it with
We don't sell your personal information. We share it with these service providers, who handle it on our behalf to provide their services:
- Shopify, our e-commerce platform, which hosts our store, checkout, customer accounts, email (Shopify Messaging), chat (Shopify Inbox) and order tools
- Payment processors that handle your payment
- Shipping carriers, which receive your name, address and phone number to deliver your order
- Apps we use with Shopify to prepare invoices, quotes and packing slips (Order Printer) and to automate store tasks (Shopify Flow)
Some data is also shared for advertising and personalization, as described in section 8. We may disclose information when required or permitted by law, or to protect our rights, for example to deal with fraud or a stolen device.
6. Ownership and ID checks for trade-ins
When we buy a device, we may ask for proof of ownership and government-issued photo ID to help prevent the resale of stolen goods. We ask only for what is reasonably needed, use it only to verify ownership and identity, prevent fraud and meet legal requirements, and keep it only as long as needed for the transaction and as required by law.
7. Marketing emails
- When you sign up for our emails, at checkout, when creating an account, or in our footer, you're agreeing to receive promotional emails from IdealofTech about deals, new arrivals and store news. The box is never pre-ticked, and we send a confirmation email before adding you (double opt-in).
- Every promotional email identifies IdealofTech, gives our mailing address and a way to contact us, and includes an unsubscribe link. You can withdraw consent at any time. We act on unsubscribe requests promptly, and always within 10 business days.
- We keep a record of when and how you gave consent.
- Unsubscribing doesn't stop messages we need to send about your orders, repairs, trade-ins or support requests.
8. Cookies, analytics and advertising
- Necessary cookies run the cart, checkout and security of our store.
- Analytics and advertising technologies are provided through Shopify and, where connected, Google (through the Google & YouTube app for Shopify). They may be used to measure visits and sales and to show you relevant ads on other websites.
- Shopify's network features: our store uses Shopify features that combine data about your interactions with our store with data from Shopify and other Shopify merchants to improve ad targeting and personalization. For this use, Shopify is responsible for the processing. You can learn more and exercise your rights through the Shopify Privacy Portal.
- Your choices: where we display a cookie banner, analytics and advertising technologies stay off until you accept them, and you can change your choice at any time. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, but that alone may not cover every technology described here.
9. Where your information is stored
Our store data is hosted by Shopify in the United States, and some of our service providers process data in other countries. Information stored outside Canada may be subject to the laws of those countries, including access by their authorities.
10. How long we keep it
- Order, invoice and payment records: as required by Canadian tax law, generally six years from the end of the tax year they relate to
- Repair and trade-in records: as long as needed for the service, warranties and legal requirements
- Marketing consent records: while we send you promotional emails and for a reasonable time afterwards to show we had consent
- Other information: only as long as we need it for the purposes above
After that, we securely delete or anonymize it.
11. Your rights
You can ask to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or withdraw your consent to its use, subject to legal and contractual limits. Quebec residents also have the right to data portability, to ask us to stop disseminating their information or to de-index it where the law allows, and to be informed about technologies used to identify, locate or profile them. To make a request, contact our Privacy Officer (section 1). We may need to verify your identity. We'll respond within 30 days.
12. Security
We use reasonable safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including access controls and encrypted (HTTPS) connections. If a privacy breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we'll notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
13. Children
Our store isn't directed at children, and you must be 18 or older to sell or trade a device to us.
14. Complaints
Please contact our Privacy Officer first. If you're not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Quebec residents can contact the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec.
15. Changes
We'll post any changes here and update the date above. If a change significantly affects how we use information you've already given us, we'll ask for your consent where the law requires it.
